工业以太网交换机产品被设计成能够经受的住极端的温度变化（通常从 -20°C到 70°C）。外型被设计成能够抵挡住外界的干扰，且经常能够把产品非常敏感的内部的高温直接进行自然冷却。
产品使用了高质量和高可靠性的元器件（如，工业设备不使用风扇而采用导热硅胶，很少使用电解电容，这些都用在商用的交换机上，因为这些元器件由于他们的使用寿命不长带来了不可靠性)。
谁会需要工业以太网交换机呢？
许多重要的应用都受益于工业以太网的使用。现列举一部分如下：
将工厂的设备层和办公室的计算机隔离开
想起以太网的一个方法就是把它当作“巨大的均衡器“。有一个非常真实的感觉， 那就是所有的设备（包括PC，服务器，PLC，传感器，执行器等）都以相同的等级连接到同一个网络上。这是因为 存在一个严格的控制每次传输的数据量， 透过以太网进行发送和接收都是先到先服务。把工厂的计算机和设备连接到同一个LAN让工程师可以通过因特网进行存取操作，并且允许工厂和商务办公室可以通过e-mai保持联络。同样它也给了商务办公室和MIS人员对工厂层的网络运行状况进行监视的选择。所有的内部连接的缺点就是在控制设备间的数据的进出非产容易的 陷入到e-mail，ICQ的运行和对不同网页的存取中。工业以太网交换机可以有效的将重要的控制设备隔离在他们自己的冲突域中。工程师们可以 从冲突域的外部来对设备进行存取，但是正如我们在开始就指出的， 数据在冲突域中将更自由。
隔离的独立设备
这种类型的应用与上面所描述的相类似，但是在这个例子中，只有一个设备连接到以太网交换机的端口上，将设备隔离在自己的冲突域中。举一个具体的例子，控制工程师可以用一个多端口的以太网交换机来连接PLC和传感器/执行器。 除了偶尔的诊断和重新配置信息从另外的一部分网络发送过来，交换机几乎将所有的控制活动与其他的网络隔离开了。为两个分开的冲突域提供了一个高速的连接。
